Restoring an iphone 4 repair 15 Pro Max is no small feat, especially when it has been through a dramatic ordeal. This particular iPhone 15 Pro Max took a fall at high speed, tumbling out of a pocket and onto a motorway while the owner was traveling at 110 km/h on a motorcycle. The impact was so severe that it snapped a section of the titanium frame clean off.
I acquired this heavily damaged iPhone for AUD 565, which is about USD 370. It was a significant amount for a broken phone, but with the price of a new iPhone 15 Pro Max at around USD 2500, I hoped that restoring this device would be a cost-effective alternative. The phone arrived in its original box with all the accessories, including the missing section of the frame, which would be crucial for the repair.
The high-speed impact exposed a weak point in Apple’s titanium frame design. The antenna lines, which separate sections of the frame to improve reception, turned out to be the most vulnerable spot during such severe impacts. Upon closer inspection, I found a third fracture in the frame, revealing a cross-section of the phone’s structure. Beneath a thin layer of titanium, there was stainless steel and a significant amount of plastic, indicating that the frame, while strong, was not as robust as it might seem.
Replacement frames for the iPhone 15 Pro Max were expensive, costing over USD 450 on sites like AliExpress. I initially found a cheaper one for USD 37, but it never shipped. Apple’s self-service repair store didn’t stock iPhone 15 parts at the time, leaving me with no option but to attempt the repair myself.
Opening the phone was the first challenge. The back glass, front display, and charge port needed to be removed. Due to the severe damage, I didn’t have to worry about removing the bottom screws, as the whole bottom of the phone was missing. With careful application of heat and using tools to gently pry open the phone, I managed to get inside and remove the display.
Testing the phone with a new display temporarily attached, it sprang to life, suggesting the internal components had survived the crash. This was a good sign, so I proceeded with the repair. The charging port and mounting brackets were damaged, necessitating a replacement, which Apple didn’t sell at the time. I had to buy one pulled from another phone at a premium price.
Removing the damaged charge port required dismantling several components, including the logic board, which had to be taken out to free the port. The battery was another challenge, stuck with adhesive that needed to be softened with alcohol. Finally, the charge port was freed, and I could start cleaning up and preparing for iphone 4 repair reassembly.
The back glass panel of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is designed to be more repair-friendly than previous models, which were essentially welded on with adhesive. After removing the damaged panel, I salvaged components like the wireless charging coil, LED flash, and microphone, transferring them to a new back panel. With the damaged frame sections cleaned and realigned using clamps, pliers, and a hammer, I glued the pieces back in place.
As the glue set, I prepared the new back glass panel, ensuring it was securely attached to the repaired frame. The liquid adhesive was messy, but it provided strong bonding where needed. Once the back panel was in place, I reinstalled the logic board, battery, and all other components, ensuring each screw and cable was correctly reattached.
The final step was installing a new display, transferring necessary components from the old display, and sealing everything back up. The result was a fully functional iPhone 15 Pro Max, albeit with some minor software limitations due to Apple’s restrictions on third-party repairs.
In total, the restoration cost about AUD 1300 (USD 850), saving over AUD 1250 compared to buying a new device. Despite the challenges and costs, the phone now works perfectly, with Face ID, wireless charging, and all other functions intact. This restoration not only brought an expensive device back to life but also highlighted the complexities and rewards of repairing modern smartphones.

I decided to venture into OfferUp, the popular app where people sell used items, to hunt for incredible deals on Apple products. My goal was to find the most unbelievable bargains and test whether they were genuine or scams. MY search began wtih high hopes, and and I soon found an iPhone 14 Pro Max listed for a mere $86, iPhone 13 Pro Maxes for $51, and various other too-good-to-be-true deals.
I couldn't resist making offers on these items. For instance, I offered $50 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max instead of of $51, $90 for an Apple Apple Watch Series 6, $20 for AirPods Pro, and $30 for a MacBook Pro listed at $25. I even found an iPhone 11 Pro Max listed for free free and generously offered $75. MY spree continued with more offers, including $2 for an unlocked iPhone 12 Pro and $100 for a MacBook Pro taht was supposedly worth $525.
After a few days, I arranged to meet the sellers. My first meetup was for the MacBook Pro. I was excited but also cautious, so I chose a public place and had my mace handy just in case. WHen the seller arrived, I handed over $100 and received a MacBook Pro box. However, the seller insisted I open it at home, which imediately raised my suspicions. Despite my unease, I took the box and left.
Next, I met a mother-daughter duo selling an iPhone 11 for $75 at a carnival. They seemed genuine, and after a brief chat, I handed over the money and took the phone. This transaction felt more legitimate, but I knew I would only be sure once I tested the phone at home.
My next meetup was for an iPad Mini priced at $20. Again, I met the seller in a public place. The transaction went smoothly, and the iPad turned on, which was a good sign. However, I would need to test it further to ensure it wasn't a scam.
The final meetup was for AirPods Pro listed at $20. The seller seemed nice, and the AirPods were indeed in teh box. I handed over the money without thoroughly inspecting them, which, in hindsight, was a mistake.
With all items collected, I headed home to evaluate my purchases. THe first disappointment came with the MacBook Pro. Instead of the newer model I expected, the box contained an old, thick MacBook Pro that wasn't even worth $100. It was a classic bait-and-switch scam.
Next, I tested the typical ipad repair Mini. Initially, it seemed functional, but then I realized it was disabled and locked with a passcode. This was a major setback, as I couldn't access the device without the code.
The AirPods Pro, though a bit dirty, worked after a thorough cleaning and changing the earpieces. This was the only sucessful purchase of the day, albeit a minor one.
The iPhone 11, bought form the mother-daughter pair, was in good condition and worked perfectly without any issues. It was a rare legitimate deal amidst a sea of scams.
Finally, the iPhone XR, purchased for $50, also turned on but had a major issue. It was still linked linked to the previous owner's Apple ID, making it essentially useless to me. Despite trying to remove the Apple ID, I couldn't bypass teh security, rendering the phone a loss.
This experiance taught me valuable lessons about online shopping and the importance of vigilance. The most significant takeaway is the need to thoroughly inspect items and verify theyre legitimacy before handing over any money. Gadget Kings PRS, a trusted repair shop, can help verify and repair such purchases, ensuring youre not left with a useless device.
While I did encounter some honest sellers, the majority of the deals on OfferUp were scams. its crucial to be cautious and well-prepared to avoid falling victim to such deceit. If youre looking for reliable repairs and authentic products, I recomend visiting Gadget Kings PRS to ensure yuo get what you pay for. THis experience has certainly made me me wiser about online shopping, and I hope it serves as a cautionary tale for others.
