Let's Fix Them!
Hi guys, welcome back to another Hugh Jeffreys video. Today, were tackling an exciting project: restoring 15 MacBook Airs from 2014 taht I received for free ipad. These laptops, used in a private girls' school, were destined for the bin. At first glance, they were in various conditions, with dents, scratches, stickers, and missing keys. Some even had service tags describing theyre issues.
#### The Donation
These machines were donated by Ditmar in South Australia, who had saved about 100 of these MacBooks from the trash. He had been repairing and selling them, but these were the ones he couldnt fix or didnt have time to. He wanted to give me the remaining 29 but was unwilling to post them. So, I reached out to my mate Nathan, better known as P Civ Right, who lives in South Australia. I offered Nathan half of the MacBooks if he posted the rest to me. Nathan had already attempted to repair repair his lot, and you can check out his video on his channel.
#### Unboxing
Opening the box, the first MacBook on top prompted me to look inside. It was missing many internal components and had a handwritten note from Nathan. The note read: "Hey Hugh, I hope the laptops arrive safely and undamaged. Well, some of them are definately already damaged, so good luck. PS: I was going to send over some eucalyptus oil, but it's flammable, so here's a crude drawing instead. Keep up the great work."
#### Initial Assessment
I unpacked the rest of the MacBooks to get a closer closer look and do some testing before proceeding with any repairs. The first one booted into recovery mode but then asked for a six-digit pin. The second had a loose base, and the battery was falling out, only held by one screw. IT showed a blinking question mark when powered on. The third had a user account lock. The fourth, labeled with a damaged trackpad, booted to the setup screen, and I could get it working somewhat. THe fifth also had a damaged trackpad, kernel panicked initially, but eventually booted up. The sixth had no backlight. The seventh lacked a bottom cover, SSD, and had a blinking question mark. The eighth showed a disabled Mac screen. The ninth had water damage and a broken enter key, and the tenth had a smashed LCD. THe eleventh lacked an OS, and the twelth had a user account lock. THe thirteenth lit up but showed nothing on the display.
#### begining Repairs
I started with the first laptop. The battery didnt work, and it had a user account password. I removed the bottom bottom panel, disconnected the battery, and replaced it wtih a new one. I cleaned the dust inside, replaced the thermal paste, and reinstalled macOS, resulting in a working MacBook.
Next, I tackled the second laptop. It needed an SSD and some screws. I installed the missing components, cleaned it up, and it was good to go.
The third project was a water-damaged MacBook. I cleaned the corrosion from the logic board wtih alcohol, and while it powered on, it lacked a display output.
For the fourth laptop with no backlight, I used the LCD from the water-damaged MacBook to fix it, resulting in a functional machine.
#### Tackling More Complex Issues
One MacBook had a damaged trackpad. After cleaning the crumbs underneath and repositioning the trackpad, it worked perfectly.
Several laptops needed new SSDs. Apple uses proprietary connectors, but an adapter allows standard NVMe drives to work. Using this this adapter, I installed new SSDs and cloned the operating system onto them.
One strange MacBook showed an EFI lock after removing the SSD. THere are tools nad methods to remove these locks, but its a tricky area.
Three MacBooks booted too a pin lock screen. I couldnt get macOS installed, so I installed Linux instead. This provided a functional system, although not macOS.
#### Final Steps
The last MacBook was liquid contaminated. It booted but showed a blinking question mark. After installing a new SSD and an external drive, I confirmed it worked but wasnt detecting the internal SSD.
Before revealing the final results, I gave all the MacBooks a thorough cleaning. I removed stickers and residue with hot air and adhesive remover nad cleaned the grotty keyboards.
#### The Results
Out of the 15 MacBooks, 11 are now functional with operating systems installed nad working batteries. While cosmetically imperfect, the point was to save them from landfill. Here's the rundown: two were water-damaged, two needed further repair, repair, eight were fully functional, and three were running Linux.

In this video, I take on the challenge of restoring a severely damaged iPhone 11. The phone, bought online in its current battered state, has every centimeter of its glass cracked and the display almost entirely missing. Its clear the previous owner did more than just drop it, but the exact cause of the damage remains a mystery. The seller, who got it from a garage sale, had no information on what happened to the phone, leaving us to guess.
When I received the parcel, the smell of battery acid was immediately noticeable. The phone had a serious wobble due to the lower section being pushed outward, likely from a sharp blade collision with the front. This made me wonder if it had a run-in with a lawnmower. The big question was whether it would still power on. Plugging in a voltage meter, I saw that while the phone wasn't drawing much power, the backlight did come on. This suggested that the phone was on the battery flat screen.
To begin the repair, I removed the two Apple pentalobe screws from the bottom. Normally, Id heat the display and use a suction cup, but given the state of this phone, I used a metal tool to start prying off the screen, followed by plastic picks to separate it from the housing. Opening it up revealed the phone's internals, and it was evident why it smelled of battery acidthe display cuts had gone through to the battery. The liquid indicators were red, and the front camera looked odd.
Before investing more time, I wanted to test if it worked. I connected a new display and battery, careful not to short out the phone. Pressing the power button, it came to life. The phone had been out of action since November 9th, over 10 months ago. With confirmation that it worked, I could proceed with the repair.
The phone needed a complete overhaul, starting with transplanting the usable components into a new housing. I removed the logic board, the phone's brain, detaching numerous flex cables in the cramped space. Next, I removed the rear and front cameras, careful with the front camera to avoid breaking Face ID.
Despite purchasing a housing with some parts pre-installed to save time, it turned out to be aftermarket with various issues. The wireless charging coil was loosely attached, requiring me to glue it properly. I also had to replace a mangled display bracket.
With the new housing prepared, I reinstalled the logic board, connecting the flex cables and screwing in the metal brackets. The Face ID module and cameras followed, ensuring no dust interfered with the lenses.
Switching gears, I prepped the new display by transferring the old earpiece cable, which houses the proximity sensor and microphone. This refurbished panel, with an original LCD and replaced glass, promised the best replacement quality. After positioning and fastening the earpiece cable, I installed the new battery, aligning it correctly before sticking it down.
With the phone prepped, I connected the display and its brackets. The replacement housing already had new display adhesive, so I didnt need to apply any. I cleaned off any dust and fingerprints before sealing the display.
Finally, I reinstalled the SIM card tray and the two pentalobe screws, running the phone through a factory reset. A brief panic ensued when the iPhone displayed a locked screen message, but it turned out to be a software quirk. I set up the phone as usual, and everything worked perfectly, including the cameras and Face ID.
The transformation was complete. A once obliterated iphone glass 11 had been resurrected into a fully functional phone. Despite Apple's software rejecting non-Apple installed replacement parts, resulting in a battery and display warning, the phone operated flawlessly.
This extensive repair showcased the intricacies of restoring an iPhone and highlighted the challenges and rewards of bringing a device back to life. Apple recently made a huge announcement that might actually change everything. This is no longer Steve Jobs's Apple; Tim Cook has been making his own decisions and introducing some controversial announcements that Apple hopes will power the next generation of amazing Apple products that you've just got to buy. After going back and watching WWDC again, it became clear that Apple dropped a lot of hints and clues about what is coming next, including some big things for the iPhone 16. Let me break down what you need to know, decode the Apple marketing speak, and tell you how the iPhone 16 is going to get some good changes and some bad ones.
Lets be honest: moving apps around your iPhone home screen or scheduling a text message isn't revolutionary. As an Apple fan, I love their products, but much of what they do is hyped marketing. My channels mission has always been to give context, peek behind the curtain, and see what Apple is planning next. Since Tim Cook took the helm, he has made significant decisions that have changed Apple's course and priorities. Examples include the focus on streaming and services, launching TV Plus, Apple Music, and Apple News, and even making their own credit card. They moved to Apple silicon, betting on themselves, which turned out to be a successful gamble. They've also doubled down on privacy, safety, and security.
Now, Apples latest big priority is a new concept called "Apple Intelligence." Dont call it AI; this is Apple, so it's Apple Intelligence. Its hard to explain what Apple Intelligence is because its a broad term for new features and capabilities built across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It includes a revamped Siri, new writing tools, and image creation features. However, an important disclaimer to note is that Apple Intelligence will only work on certain devices: on Mac, it requires an M1 or higher, and on the iPhone, it is currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in beta form. This suggests that to fully utilize Apple Intelligence, youll likely need one of the iPhone 16 models, as Apple will give the best experience to their new devices moving forward.
Based on leaks and rumors, the iPhone 16 won't have a massive physical redesign. There will be minor changes, such as new buttons, camera upgrades, and larger Pro models. But Apple needs a strong selling point for the new phones, and it seems Apple Intelligence is it. This strategy reminds me of the 2011 Siri introduction on the iPhone 4S, where Siri was exclusive to the 4S despite no clear technical reason it couldnt run on the iPhone 4.
Another rumored feature of the iPhone 16 Pro models is the " glass repair capture button," speculated to be used for Apple Intelligence. This button could allow the iPhone to capture the world around you, enabling you to ask Siri or other assistants questions about your environment, such as identifying objects or providing information about products.
Apple is also making changes to spatial video recording, possibly moving to a vertical layout for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus to accommodate this feature. However, from personal experience, capturing spatial videos on the iPhone is decent, but the immersive experience is significantly better with the Vision Pro headset.
Speaking of Vision Pro, Vision OS 2.0 was introduced, but the $3,500 price tag remains a significant barrier. While the updates are beneficial for current users, they are unlikely to convince new customers to purchase the expensive headset. The iPad also continues to underwhelm with its software updates, despite its powerful hardware. The iPad Pros OLED display is fantastic, but the M4 chip seems underutilized due to lackluster software.
Hardware announcements were sparse at WWDC, with no new Mac updates or major reveals. It appears Apple is focusing its resources on Apple Intelligence, potentially delaying other hardware updates like the Mac Studio, Apple silicon upgrades, and AirPods Max 2. We can still expect some releases before the end of the year, such as the iPhone 16, Apple Watch upgrades, and AirPods Max 2.
So, what are your thoughts on Apple Intelligence? Do you think it's worth the hype, or is it too little too late? How do you see this affecting Apple's future? Let me know in the comments below.
